Heather Bowns is a senior studying Recreational Therapy at Grand Valley State University. She has been volunteering at the Center since September 2022 and has now moved into a program intern role working alongside Miss Cheryl. As the program intern, it is Heather’s responsibility to create and implement unique programs for the teens and tweens that attend Wednesday night programs along with special events and family programs. After graduation, Heather plans to complete a recreational therapy internship out of state and then continue onto graduate school at Grand Valley State University to obtain her master’s degree in recreational therapy.
Heather has a passion for working with children and she thinks that play is the most powerful tool when interacting with children. Throughout her college years she has acquired a variety of unique experiences working with children of all ability levels including children who have developmental delays, vision impairments, and physical disabilities. Additionally, Heather was also a volunteer in the child life program at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital where she learned how to help children with pain management by using playful diversion activities.
When Heather is not at the Center, she loves to spend time participating in outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, cross country skiing, biking, and rock climbing. Heather especially enjoys exploring the national parks and it is on her bucket list to hike in all sixty-three of the United States national parks.
