But not Becca Burgers the patient. Not Becca Burgers who has leukemia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">It\u2019s Becca Burgers the kid, beaming because she\u2019s about to burst through the doors of the Children\u2019s Healing Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">And simply play.<\/p>\n<p>Becca, 4, is just one of the many children whose immune systems are compromised by disorders or disease, and whose parents naturally fret over exposing them to environments where they might contract a cold or infection.<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosed with leukemia in August 2014, Becca enjoys attending church and preschool activities when she can. But parents Mark and Susan are ever-vigilant that she could be exposed to germs that compound her battle with leukemia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has less infection-fighting ability as it is\u201d because of the chemotherapy sessions Becca endures, explains Susan. \u201cSo we take some pretty strong precautions \u2013 a lot of hand-washing and disinfecting surfaces. It\u2019s a constant risk wherever we go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Except for inside the Children\u2019s Healing Center. That\u2019s because the Center employs rigorous health standards that create stronger assurances kids who go to play there will exit as healthy as when they entered. The air there is specially filtered. Toys and structures are cleaned constantly. And anyone entering the facility is screened for infections.<\/p>\n<p>Most of which is lost on Becca and her younger brother Ben, 2. \u201cAll I know is that all I have to do is say the words \u2018healing center\u2019 and they know it\u2019s going to be a good time,\u201d says Susan.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOasis is a good word for it. Becca likes to pretend, and they have a great storefront where she can play with the cash register and shopping carts. She\u2019s also into everything medical, and they have a great little doctor kit, so she gives me checkups.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Becca also thrills to the music that\u2019s often playing, and loves taking part in special events, including an upcoming \u201cFrozen Day,\u201d which will allow kids to celebrate elements connected to the movie \u201cFrozen,\u201d which \u201cis Becca\u2019s favorite,\u201d says mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat it comes down to,\u201d says Susan, whose family hails from Caledonia, \u201cis that this has become such a safe haven. It\u2019s risk-free, it\u2019s positive, and it\u2019s a happy place and a refuge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the staff and its executive director, Amanda Winn, \u201cthey\u2019re amazing,\u201d says Susan. \u201cWe\u2019re always greeted by name. They know Becca\u2019s interests, and they\u2019re just all so fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Susan\u2019s advice to other parents seeking respite from the rigors connected with a childhood disease that threatens their youngster\u2019s immune system? \u201cCome to the Center. It\u2019s the first of its kind, and they\u2019re doing an amazing job.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a place where you can come relax, and let your guard down, if only for an
