This month’s blog is all about healthy eating and summer opportunities for healthy eating! Healthy eating includes eating at home instead of out, eating farm fresh food, and growing your own food at home. It is prime time in Michigan for farm fresh food so let’s dive in to all of the great things about healthy eating!

Healthy eating means including a variety of foods into your diet, so don’t be afraid to venture out and try something new! Here in Michigan, the months of July and August bring tons of corn, blueberries, raspberries, peppers, tomatoes, and watermelon.

Make it a goal with yourself and the family to try a few of these in the next month! They can be found at your local farmers market or in the grocery store.

Speaking of grocery stores, one of the best ways to eat healthy is to plan your meals ahead of time and eat at home. A tip for the grocery store is to always make a list so you don’t stray away from what you need. It is also beneficial to never shop when you are hungry!

Another tip for the grocery store is you can replace those sugary cravings with a fruit, like a berry that contains natural sugars and health benefits.

Having a garden at home is another way you can introduce healthy foods into your diet and also get the family involved! So how do you start one? First you want to scope out your land and see what area gets optimal sun, has good soil, and is easily accessible to water with a watering can or hose. Next you pick out what foods you want to grow! Beans, herbs, berries, and sprouts are good options for first time at-home farmers. Now you plant those in the ground and water per the crops instructions and watch the magic happen! This is easy to do with kids and can be a bonding opportunity for families.

Now that you’ve learned some new things about healthy eating we challenge you to take on the goal of trying new fruits and veggies and starting a garden!
