Hi, my name is Mike Copeland. I am a Patient Advocate for the Sickle Cell Disease Association – MI Chapter (SCDAAMI). When I was asked by the Children’s Healing Center to write a blog post for their website I decided to write a post dedicated to my brother Raymond, a sickle cell warrior.
In early 1999 I was looking for something “fun” to do, and maybe to earn a little extra money. So when my sister told me The Mud Room, a cute little studio in Ada, was looking for part-time help I jumped on the opportunity. Little did I know what that opportunity would turn out to be!
Today, my daughter’s physician asked me, “How do you envision your daughter’s death?” Let that sink in for a minute….
I came across the Center by accident. My university, Grand Valley, had shared the internship posting on their social media and it just happened to catch my eye.

Hi, my name is Mary Prindle. I am a 13 year old and a member at the Center. I have two incurable diseases
If you could go back to your teen years, what would you change?. Teens are like squirrels (too indecisive to pick a direction). Not yet an adult but no longer a child, yet they are often expected to make decisions like an adult and aren’t always treated like one.
My name is Jan Burgers and my connection with The Children’s Healing Center began with a leukemia diagnosis for my little granddaughter, Becca, when she was 3 ½ years old.
My name is Amy Neumann and I have been a nurse for 15 years. I started my career in 2005 as a bedside nurse in the Pediatric Critical Care Unit at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
